Last week a friend sent me a $15 gift certificate card to Starbucks as a thank you for something nice I did. :)

It sat on my desk for a week, taunting me with delicious Starbuxxy goodness.

Keep in mind I've given up coffee for over a month now as part of my weight loss plan. (Go me! even my husband couldn't believe I gave up coffee, it's so much a part of my regular routine.)

Well, I finally caved. I told myself I might as well use it up so at least it isn't there taunting me any more! So I drove to Starbucks.

I ordered my usual. Grande Peppermint Mocha, Sausage breakfast sandwich, and a slice of Lemon loaf for later.

Then I came home and entered my usual into my diet diary at myfitnesspal.com

Grande peppermint mocha 290 calories
Sausage english muffin sandwich 500 calories
lemon loaf 490 calories

for a grand total of 1280 calories. That's JUST BREAKFAST. And back before I cut out coffee, this is what I would get maybe 3 times a WEEK on a good week. WTF. That's not even counting lunch or dinner when fast food was a regular occurance at our house! It is no wonder I've gotten to be such a fatass with how bad my diet has been.

NO MORE STARBUCKS FOR ME, KTHANX.

I did my second day of the Shred workout today. Yes, I know it was a week after Day 1, so we're starting over. With the kids' first week of school and readjusting to a new routine, it was pretty hectic there for awhile. I didn't give up completely on excersizing, I have been taking the dog for walks every day. But this time it's for serious.

So. Day 1... Again. Man, I am having a HARD time fitting a workout into my day. I get the baby to sleep and the dog napping and go to press play on the DVD. Then the dog wigs out and won't stop barking at me, the baby wakes up, and I'm about ready to kill them both. SO frustrating. I started the DVD and had to stop it not 30 seconds in at least 3 times, but I finally made it through the darn thing!

The first time I tried the Shred workout a week ago it totally kicked my butt and I was sore for a couple of days afterward. I am SO out of shape. But today I did it and I felt, you know, worked out, but not like I wanted to die. Lol. I am still doing some modifying and pushing through but I think I'm able to make it through a bit easier also. I also had to pause the video twice to get water breaks since Jillian Michales is relentless like that.

Afterwards I felt so great that I was even contemplating doing another session tonight. But I think once a day for awhile is good, I don't want to overkill and hurt myself. So I went for a two hour walk instead. :)

So I completely tanked the whole watching what I eat thing while in the hospital with a kid with a broken arm, and that led to the next few days at home totally blowing off logging my diet, having gotten out of the habit. Which I then used as an excuse to eat unhealthy and I'm pretty sure I gained the five pounds back that I lost. Sigh.

Started logging my diet again the other day, have to get back in the habit again. Also had the thought that it is time to start excersising seriously. I've been putting it off, but I realized that even if my diet isn't the best and I don't loose any weight to start, getting fit and toning my muscles will make me look thinner, because a large part of the reason why I still look pregnant is because my abs are so stretched out from having so many babies.

A large part of putting off the excersise program has been the feeling of needing support that I don't have. But then I realize I do have support! My daughter Amara keeps bugging me about when we're going to do my excersise program together. So I decided she can be my excersise buddy!

Last night we started our Day 1 of the 30 Day Shred. I have 5 lb weights and Amara used two 2lb cans of chili from the cupboard, lol. It totally kicked our butts and I had that noodle feeling in my arms and legs afterwards. I made it through all but the last 4 minutes of the routine with a little modifying, then the baby woke up and I had to go get him, but Amara finished the whole thing! She was a rock star!

After Day 1 I can say that I've learned a couple of things from the experience:

* It may seem silly to wear shoes in the house (I know it does to me) but I need to wear sneakers while working out. My ankles will thank me.

* Granny panties are underrated. It's totally counter productive to working out if I'm wearing hipster underwear that keep sliding down my ass as I'm jumping around.

In the past two weeks, I've done so good cutting out the fast food from my diet. I've gone through the drive through a couple times for the kids, and gone home and made myself a sandwich. Well, a few days ago I did have one chicken nugget and a couple sips of sweet tea. But overall I think I've done an awesome job of changing my habits and resisting temptation!

Today I went through Jack in the Box and lost my resolve. However, I think it's okay to treat my cravings every now and then as long as it's within reason. I've read that dieting is rarely successful when you deny yourself all the time. So I ended up getting myself lunch. But I didn't cheat myself entirely - I logged it in my food diary on myfitnesspal.com and WOW - it's one thing to know that fast food is bad, and another thing entirely to see all your calories eaten up with one meal. And I only ate half my burger - sheesh.

I've only lost another pound in the past few days which brings me up to 5 in the last two weeks or so. Which I think is a good start. But I'm thinking about adding in some excersize to help things along. Now, I am a person who has never excersized a day in her life,so this should be interesting... I've thought about joining a gym or getting a membership at the YMCA, so as to have babysitting while I work out, but right now financially that isn't in the cards. I've heard some good things about the Insanity workout, but before I take that financial plunge I've decided to start with Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred which seems to have decent reviews on Amazon and I've had some friends who did the program and liked it also. After I make it through the 30 days I'll look at buying myself the Insanity workout as a reward!

It's just a matter of starting the darn thing and getting over my fears and nervousness about working out. No one but the kids to see me and laugh at me in my own living room, and a little pain is good, right? :)

In tracking my diet and paying more attention to what I eat in order to lose weight, I've cut out sugar and sweets almost completely. It hasn't been a concious decision like "I can't eat sugar anymore" just in an effort to eat well and in watching my calories I haven't been putting any unneccesary calories into my diet. I've always had a huge sweet tooth and have had to have some sort of "treat" every day, so this was one of the things I thought I'd really have an issue with if I ever "went on a diet". But I've been so focused on my goal of eating well and tracking my daily diet on myfitnesspal.com that I haven't really minded. And now that it's been a week, I think my body may be detoxing itself from all the sugars, because I really don't crave sweet things like I used to anymore. I am proud of myself for kicking the sugar habit and can't believe it happened so effortlessly without me even noticing!

So far I've lost 4 lbs just by logging my diet and paying more attention to what I eat! I am so totally excited. It seems pretty small compared to my short term goal of losing 25 lbs, and my long term goal of losing 45 lbs, but at the same time it seems HUGE because it's something, it's progress, I'm on my way there!

Hey Ladies,

Estimating your daily calorie need
fitness145

There's many different ideas out there of how many calories one should eat, especially when it comes to weight loss.
There's a link to a free BMR calculator here, but keep in mind that your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is the amount of calories your body needs to survive at rest (rest in this case equates to sleeping). The more activity that you do during the day, the more calories you're going to require.
There are many resources available to you to help determine your particular requirements, and the following are the ones that I have found helpful for both myself and past clients.

MyFitnessPal

Sparkpeople

MyPyramid.gov

Harris Benedict Equation Calculator <--- my personal favorite

Please use caution when going on a restricted calorie diet. Too few calories can cause you to plateau in your weight loss goals and/or make you severely ill.

How to measure your body!
fitness145
Here is the link and a quick clip!!
http://www.weight-loss-program.com/a...surements.html

Chest: Measure around the largest part of your chest.

Biceps: Measure midway between the top of your shoulder and elbow.

Waist: Measure one inch below your belly button NOT above. No cheating! Don't pull in your belly or stick it out.

Hips: Measure your hips around the largest part of your buttocks with your heels together.

Thigh: Thighs are measured separately. Stand with your legs slightly apart. Measure your upper leg where the circumference is largest.
